Day 3 week 2
We got up early yesterday to start our remote travel day only to be forced to stop and follow a barge thru the fog. We will include a few pics that have a very eerie look to them and looks like bad storm clouds but indeed was fog. The problem with going thru fog on this trek is the river is heavily traveled by barges and the channels are narrow and curvy so it's important to know what is coming ahead of us. The Captain and first mate are watching the gas closely on this part of the trip so we can make sure we have enough gas to get thru the next 3 days. The river has some very interesting movement to the water. There are areas where the water churns and has the potential to literally turn the boat around, so staying clear of those areas is important. We have had a few waves and churns that have rearranged some of the contents inside the cabin. But so far nothing has gotten broken or spilled! We ended the day in the little diversion off of the Mississippi River near Cape Girardeau, Missouri. It was a calm channel where we could anchor out of the main river, and away from barge traffic. It was a really beautiful area and we tied up with our new friends. It was our first real adventure on the dinghy and we had a great time exploring the channel. A fishing boat went on the channel right before us and we were finally able to see the famous flying carp first hand. Turns out the sound of the motor is what gets them jumping. They are big, and scared the begabbers out of us when they jumped right next to the dinghy. Even though the locals don't like them we were happy to see them and had a great time watching them! A nice grilled steak, boy scout potatoes, and a fresh salad, some wine, the moon light, conversation and laughs with old and new friends made for a priceless end to a great day! Today is a new day and we are off to a great start! We are also celebrating our 32 anniversary today! Never would we have imagined we would be here on this adventure....but then our life continues to be a great adventure! Life is good!!
